First competive outing for the season for Carlisle and Penrith’s under 10s, saw both teams getting to grips with new areas of the contact game. Carlisle’s core of more experienced players saw them dominate the mini tournament – with the Carlsile B team coming out on top – hat-trick hero Josh Park starring for the Bs whilst try machine Chris Green shone for the A’s.
Penrith proved worthy opponents and the repeat clash later in the season will be interesting as their talented players grow more familiar with the contact game.

Saturday, 27th September - Cumbria Shield League
Sadly, Carlisle had to cancel at relatively short notice with several late cry offs that meant they were unable to field a viable front row. Sincere apologies to Silloth who deserve better when they are trying to revitalise the game in the town.

CARLISLE CRUSADERS 7 pts V TYNEDALE 51 pts

Saturday, 27th September – Candy League
Tynedale, strengthened by the inclusion of their 1st XV skipper at number 8 were just too powerful for what on paper was a strong Carlisle side. Competition for 1st XV slots saw Glen Weightman and Matt Rogers in the Crusaders and both had good games. Weightman’s mixture of passing and kicking kept the Hexham outfit alert for the full 80 minutes because it was his good movement of the ball that released that veteran, Martin Plummer, a smart pop pass having drawn the cover defence for Plummer to hand off his opposite centre before scoring the only try for the city second string. Weightman converted.
The Warwick Road side kept the moral high ground throughout the game and kept going to the end, with some uncharacteristic missed tackles around the fringes making the socreline flatter the visitors somewhat.
There were a lot of positives to take into the next training session in readiness of the visit to Morpeth next week!

CARLISLE 15 PTS ILKLEY 15 PTS

Saturday, 27th September – North 2 East
On their first ever visit to Warwick Road, Ilkley, newly promoted and, like Carlisle, without any league points thus far, were determined to make an impact on this match. From a Yorkshire Dale famous for the lyrics of “On Ilkley Moor Bar T’at”, they were anxious to convert to reality the words from that famous ditty,”Then we shall ‘ave to bury thee, bury thee”. After an opening flourish from the city side, Ilkley set about trying to dig a grave for their hosts, and almost succeeded!
Carlisle’s preparations were thwarted before the game when prop Martin McGimpsey succumbed to a calf proplem in the warm up and winger James Clark was ill. Harry Marshall stepped up to the front row and Liam Nicholls replaced Clark.
The opening ten minutes were quite phrenetic with Carlisle taking the game to the Dalesmen in the opening minutes before being forced onto the backfoot when the visitors had them penned in their own 22 for a lengthy spell. For the most part the defence stood firm but they could not prevent a couple of tries before half time from Jonnie Shanks and Terrence Sibanda, Pete Shanks converting the former.
Coach, Richard Metcalf must have injected some venom into his side at the break because they looked revitalised in the second period and within 20 minutes of the restart had taken the lead through tries on 51 minutes from centre Chris Harris, and 4 minutes later from stand off George Graham. Graham managed to convert the first bus hit the inside of the near post with his own, only to see the back bounce back in field! He atoned for that miss three minutes later when he landed a penalty.
George Graham. Stand off half
Carlisle were in the ascendency by now with only the occasional flourish from Ilkley, although on 73 minutes, young Graham missed a chance to increase the lead for his team when he fluffed a penalty opportunity. This seemed to unsettle Carlisle a little and they spent the remaining minutes defending a sustained assault of their own line and succumbed to a penalty in the dying seconds that allowed Ilkley to share the spoils.
Given their second half performance Carlisle deserved more from the game!

CARLISLE MAKE CHANGES

Still looking for their first league success of the season, Carlisle make some changes to the side that lost at Aspatria last week.
Coach Richard Metcalf commented that the was heartened by the Carlisle effort in the Bower Park derby game, but he is still striving to find the right blend of youth and experience to get the league points account opened.
Martin Grealish resumes at lock after missing out last week with a virus. He replaces Gareth Wylie who will be out for some time after disclocating a shoulder. Aiden Day is his partner at lock. Otherwise the pack remains unchanged.
The half back pairing will be one that finished the match at Aspatria. Ben Blain retains the scrum half slot after impressing when he moved in from the wing last week. The other piston in the engine room is George Graham who moved to outside from scrum half to let Blain in last week.
Young Chris Harris who has impressed in his two outings thus far, deservedly keeps his place in the centre, and is partnered by the recalled Barry Earl.
James Clark is on the right wing and Paddy McDonnel comes in on the left flank.
Liam Nicholls keeps the bench warm as a back replacement with Harry Marshall and Scott Rattray keeping him company as cover for the pack.
The Crusaders expect a hard challenge when they entertain Tynedale in the Candy League. They expect to finalise their team nearer the time, although they anticipate fielding a strong XV to play in what is expected to be one of their hardest clashes of the campaign.
The Hornets travel to Silloth in a Cumbria Shield League match and will be looking to carry on from their success last Saturday when they disposed of a Creighton XV quite comfortably in the second half.
Carlisle Colts are home too. They entertain Northern in a Colts League fixture, one that has a tendency to produce some exciting rugby.
Junior and Youth rugby (under 7’s right through to under 16’s) is now well under way at Warwick Road and any families wanting to introduce their children to the game are welcome at the Club on Sunday mornings from 10.00 am. Whilst the kids enjoy themselves, stay and have crack with other parents with a bacon ‘butty’ and a coffee!
Carlisle have been notifed this week that they have been awarded the RFU Mini & Youth Seal of Approval to add to their general RFU accreditation. It is expected that a formal presentation evening will take place at their Warwick Road HQ in the near future.
