Over the past few season’s Carlisle have had the edge over their local rivals, culminating in our County Cup final win at the end of last season.

This time it was the Greens that took the honours with a league win that suggests they will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Carlisle started the brighter and retained possesion well; Wigton were caught offside and Steven Benson slotted an early penalty.

However, it was Wigton who throughout the match showed the superior core skills and gradually began with possession to look the more likely. They took the lead on 20 minutes releasing their winger from a scrum and scoring in the leaft corner. An excellent conversion gave them a 3-7 half time advantage.

Two further tries early in the second half, one converted, gave them a clear advantage.

Carlisle came back into the game but their only reward was a James Rocke try following are rare incursion into the Wigton 22. Steven Benson added the conversion to complete the scoring.

Carlisle Colts have no match next week and will need to train hard to prepare for the visit of Northern on Saturday 27 September.
