On 21st September, Carlisle Cougars faced Altrincham Kersal in the first league game of the season. With an inexperienced line-up they knew that this would be a game to learn from and gain experience.

It started well for the Cougars. The forward pack applied pressure from kick off which resulted in an early try for scrum half Jenny Postlethwaite. Unfortunately this seemed to wake up the opposition who started to show their experience – exploiting gaps in the Cougars back line.

By half time Altrincham had taken control of the game with their speedy full back running in several tries. This continued in the second half with the Cougars trying to keep the ball in the tight, and Altrincham spinning it out to their backs supported by strong running from their back row, resulting in several more tries.

The Cougars did not allow their heads to drop and played the game right until the final whistle. Many positives can be taken – the pack showed their strength winning scrums against the head, and showing strong ball carrying in the tight. Four players made league debuts including Steph Musgrave who has progressed through the girls section at Carlisle and Emma Dalton (tight head prop) who was given coaches player. Players player went to Jenny Postlethwaite.

The Cougars next game is October 5th against old rivals Hartlepool at their Warwick road home, kick off is 14.30, all support welcome.
