CRUSADERS V CUMBRIA POLICE
Tuesday, 4th November 2008 at 6.30 pm
Older members around the Club will remember that great man, Tom Wood. It is over a decade now since Tom sadly passed away. He was a copper of the old school and a prop forward of no mean ability - there are many out there who will testify to titanic struggles in the pack.
A man who never suffered fools gladly, Tom was a valued member of the Club, and as well as playing long after many would have hung up their boots, he was a member of the committee at Carlisle RFC.
Tom is remembered around this time each year with a game between a Carlisle XV and the Cumbria Police. Come along and enjoy a ‘friendly’ match and make a donation to charity - a collection is always made for the Eden Valley Hospice.

Borthwick to Captain England

Congratulations to Steve Borthwick on his appointment as the England Captain. As many people may know, Steve has many family connections in the Carlisle area and we will all be rooting for him. Hopefully, he will be able to lead them to the success that has deserted them in recent years.
Martin Johnson, now England manager, was a great captain and leader of men and if we respect that, we have to endorse his choice, he is best placed to make that decision with all his experience.
Members of the Carlisle Club showing an especially keen interest, because of their close family ties with Steve, will be Geoff and Colin Jackson along with Stuart Rawes.

Carlisle Colts 10 v Wigton Colts 21

Friendly
Carlisle had a free league weekend and Wigton’s scheduled league opponents, Consett, having withdrawn from the league, so this was a hastily arranged friendly. Wigton demonstrated they are a force to be reckoned with this season but Carlisle battled throughout, and for much of the game we were well in contention.
The weather over the weekend was atrocious, but the Carlisle pitch was fine and well grassed. Carlisle had the benefit of a strong wind in the first half and had the lions share of possession. Wigton were tenacious in defence and looked dangerous with the ball in hand. They scored firsdt when, on their first incursion into the Carlisle half, a jinking run from their fly half saw him score a try near the posts…and converted. The slippery conditions dictated a tight game and there was no further score to half time.
Wigton dominated th early exchanges of the second half with the elements in their favour, but this time the Carlisle defence doggedly held out. Carlisle began to assert themselves, particularly in the forwards, but having worked their way into the visitors half, saw an interception from the Wigton fly half, and he raced 50m to score under the posts. Conversion of the try took the score to 14 – nil. But Carlisle heads didn’t drop and Keiron Little finally got the ball in the Wigton half with enough space to sprint over for a try.
The game see-sawed for the final twenty minutes with Wigton pressing, but Carlisle denying them whilst always looking to break out. Again though, it was a Carlisle error that allowed for yet another interception and converted try. Carlisle dug deep and in a final foray deep into Wigton territory saw Stepehn Hodgkinson scramble over for a consolation try.
The Colts return to league action next Saturday when they travel to Morpeth seeking their first league win.

Candy League
For the first twenty minutes we were bullied up front by a very strong and powerful Westoe front five. They were very mature and experienced.
Our front five were comparatively young, with John Bowman, Josh Holmes, Matt Davies, , skipper Hess, Callum and Adam Spiers, all in their late teens or early twenties.
There was some poor first up defence where we missed too many gain line tackles and allowed Westoe a flattering score line, and that coupled with a very good scrum half just signed from Durham City, who ran in no less than four tries. That left the Crusaders with some work to do on scrummage technique and defence along with defence around the fringes.
Crusaders man of the match went to hooker, John Bowman, who hit hard and carried strongly, rewarding him with the only Crusaders try of the game.
Next week away to Penrith.

Having missed out on getting the league points at Old Crossleyans, Glen Weightman was determined not to come away from Broomfield empty handed. He won the weekly meat hamper in the Old Crossleyans draw.
Stopping off at a hostelry in Shap on the way home, Weightman and others, persuaded the chef to cook his hamper of meat and provide a plentiful supply of chips to sustain their team mates for the long haul back to Carlisle!

North 2 East League
Saturday, 25th October 2008
On only their second ever visit to Broomfield, Carlisle were looking for a repeat of last season when they eclipsed their hosts by one point. Given the very windy conditions, but with no rain, and a good firm pitch, the Warwick Road side will be very disappointed to come away from Halifax with nothing to show for their efforts!
From the outset, Carlisle took the match to their hosts and gave then a torrid time, keeping them in defence for 80% of the opening period. The worrying thing for Carlisle must be their failure to turn their regular forward dominance into points.
Such was the frustration of the home defence at being menaced in their own backyard, they found themselves nine points in arrears from three well taken penalties by stand off, Glen Weightman in the first fifteen minutes.
Weightman had the chance to add another but the wind helped the ball wide of the posts. This was followed by a flourish from the “Crocs” before their fly half, Chris Jones was binned for a dangerous tackle just over the half hour mark.
With a minute to go for the break, Crossleyans reduced the arrears with a try wide out on the right despite protests that the ball had very clearly been knocked on. No conversion, and Carlisle were looking good value for their lead at that stage.
In the second half Carlisle continued to play reasonably well for little return, and despite ample possession soon found themselves in arrears largely through some poor handling that was giving advantage away. Within three minutes of the restart they conceded a converted try at the posts with a penalty added on fifty minutes.
Despite their relative inexperience it was youngsters in the side who caught the eye; hooker Tom Graham is fast earning himself a reputation as a capable replacement for big brother Joe, now with Tynedale. Chris Harris, still at Trinity School, is improving with every game and with the right support on and off the field, is a great prospect. Both tried hard to generate a return for their side.
Carlisle were still in with a chance but the game finally slipped away just after the seventy minute mark when the “crocs” were awarded a penalty – the ball struck the offside post, bounced back in field, and the follow up allowed Crossleyans another converted try. In the closing embers of the match another penalty gave the result a rather false picture of what was, overall, an entertaining fixture.
The men from Warwick Road will need to add a little more finesse to their game if the season has not to turn sour on them. It’s OK playing quite good rugby, but in the final analysis, the points on the board decide success or otherwise!

Bon Voyage Tim

Tim Hughes or Crazy Horse to his mates, is off on his travels shortly and will be spending a period of time down under in New Zealand. Doubtless, if he puts as much effort into this adventure as he puts into his game on the rugby field, then he will have an exciting experience.
The sort of chap who never gives less than 100% in what ever he does, he will certainly be missed around Warwick Road during his absence.
Bon voyage Tim, have a great time and, if you have room in your return baggage, a couple of Maoris will be a welcome addition to our squad!
Anyone wanting a chat with Tim before he leaves, he is having a pint or two in the Club from 9.00 pm on Saturday, 25th October - hence no stops on the way back from Old Crossleyans!
