The first game of the season for the U14s proved to be a great start. The long journey was well and truly forgotten as the team started the first half very strongly and after good interplay between forwards and backs Joe Goddard went over for Carlisle’s first try, Dean Kirsopp added the conversion.

Alnwick came back strongly and were beginning to make an impression with strong rucking and crisp handling. Thomas Blythe went over in the corner to get the first Alnwick points on the board after 15 minutes, the conversion was missed. Carlisle really got stuck in with excellent spoiling work, strong driving runs by Chris Marsh, Stuart Cannon and Scott Hogarth opened up the defence for Jack Mitchell to go over for his first try, Dean Kirsopp added the conversion just before half time.

After the break Alnwick really raised their game, Carlisle on the other hand eased off, as a result, Alnwick scored twice in quick succession through, Adam Wilkinson and Jonathan Roxburgh, without their first choice kicker both conversions were missed, but they had drawn ahead 15-14. Not to be denied Carlisle came back strongly in the last quarter, Andrew Glendinning making sharp breaks and was well supported by WIlson Noctor and Daniel Fairclough.

With 6 minutes to go, after some concerted pressure, Jack Walker made ground down the right only for the ball to come back out to the left and Jack Mitchell went over for his second try. Dean Kirsopp added another fine conversion to retain his 100% record. The final whistle went with the score at 15-21, an satisfying Carlisle win but above all a very entertaining and enjoyable game of rugby.
