Have your say on the Experimental Law Variations (ELVs)
November 29, 2008 by admin
Please take time to read the following information from the RFU and then complete the on line survey. This is an opportunity for everyone connected with the Club to contribute to the future of the game. Don’t miss it!
The Rugby Football Union is giving everyone involved in English rugby the chance to have their say on the Experimental Law Variations being trialled this season.
A website survey at www.rfusurvey.co.uk is currently open to all interested parties until December 16 and the results will be used as part of the RFU’s report to the International Rugby Board, who will vote on whether to implement the ELVs into rugby law in May 2009.
The RFU believes that some of the 13 ELVs could fundamentally change the nature of the game as it is currently known and that all those potentially affected by their introduction should be consulted.
RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron said: “As these Experimental Law Variations could potentially result in major changes to the Laws of the Game, the RFU believes it is important to consult those involved in the game at every level and give them an opportunity to express their views.
“This online survey will form a major part of our report to the IRB on what impact the ELVs have had on English rugby this season. The responses last time demonstrated just how many people care passionately about this game of ours.
“I would urge everyone with an interest in the future of our game to go to www.rfusurvey.co.uk and spend ten minutes completing the questionnaire so we can paint as accurate a picture as possible of people’s views in England.”

Nigel Arismandez is 34 years of age and was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and has recently moved into the Carlisle area where he is now working.
He showed his eagerness for the game, Warwick Road being his first port of call after the furniture was unloaded!
Nigel comes to Carlisle from National 3 South side, Worthing and previously was with Leicester Lions where he met his partner Diane.
He prefers to play in the second row where his 6′4″ frame is likely to make an impact. However, he can also play in the centre. Only recently, he has returned from Brazil where he played for Trinidad in the Rugby World Cup qualifiers. He has 15 caps for, and has captained his country.
Nigel enjoys coaching and has worked with youngsters at his previous clubs, so his experience will be welcomed at Warwick Road - as always, professional life permitting.
What a small world though! Talking with vice chairman of rugby, Russell Robinson, Nigel was able to relate to information concerning relatives of Russell who have had long connections with rugby in Trinidad!
Welcome the city and we hope you enjoy your stay and your association with our Club.

Cougars v Sheffield
November 26, 2008 by admin
The lack of regular competitive matches is showing tell-tale signs in the Cougars. Admittedly, circumstances did not favour the visitors, with dubious refereeing, a long bus journey and Siberian-like winds to contend with. The large number of inexperienced players has, of course, a part to play too, but if the last roaring twenty minutes of all their matches is anything to go by, it really shouldn’t! This old Cougar habit is taking a long time to die-hard!
The first try for Sheffield came very early on, but the missed conversion took the edge off this initial sting, further softened by a well aimed penalty kick from Fly-half Lisa Ritchie moments later. The points offered the team a psychological boost and a little relief, short-lived though this was. Sideline support from Carlisle U18 Emma Sutton and physio Ness Galbraith would prove invaluable.
Sheffield fielded a pacey and opportunistic team who reacted better to loose ball and applied the pressure in defence more convincingly. Carlisle lacked structure, particularly in defence leaving gaps for unforgiving opposition wingers and centres to storm through. Questionable, and at times dangerous, tactics in the scrums and handling in the rucks from Sheffield went unchecked and simply exacerbated the visitors’ problems. There was a whiff of panic about Carlisle when scoring seemed possible which led to some silly and crucial mistakes. By contrast, Sheffield kept their heads and by half time the visitors were trailing.
The start of the second half saw little notable change from either side. In spite of some great breaks made by Centre Laura Cunningham (Coaches Player), superb ball carrying by Captain Lucy Meadley (Player’s Player) and consistently solid support from Hooker Sarah Burns, Carlisle just couldn’t seem to finish it off. Injuries continued to halt play, fortunately to the detriment of the winning side who seemed to be easing off.
In the dying stages of the match, right on cue, Carlisle bounced back with two classic tries, both from Meadley, and within as many minutes. The first came at the end of a long sequence of rucks pounding along the Sheffield try line, which finally yielded a gap for the loosehead prop to bulldoze through and score just left of the posts.
At the restart, one phase of play saw the ball shipped back to Meadley in her own half who, with an almost magnetic pull to the same spot on the opposition try line, stormed all the way up the pitch to single-handedly add another spectacular five points to the board. Unfortunately, the energy this visibly sent through the team came, yet again, all too late and the sound of the final whistle is fast becoming the most disappointing sound to any Cougar ear.
The next game is the first home fixture against York on Sunday 30th November at 2.15. All support welcome. Contact the Cougars on carlislecougars@hotmail.co.uk for information.

RFU North 2 East League
DRIFFIELD MATCH OFF!
Sadly, the match in RFU North 2 East League away at Driffield on 29th November 2008 has been postponed.
Last week Driffield should have entertained Gateshead in the RFU Intermediate Cup. Heavy overnight snow caused the game to be postponed. RFU regulations dictate that postponed cup games take precedence over league matches!
In the event that Driffield are beaten by Gateshead on Saturday, the league game has been re-arranged for Saturday, 13th December with a 2.15 pm kick off. But, the venue for the game will be at CARLISLE and we will go to Driffield in March 2009.
If Driffield win the cup game, then the league encounter will be further postponed until a date in January 2009.

U15’s v Kendal
November 25, 2008 by admin
A slippy journey to Kendal in wintery conditions found a ground more suited to alpine sports than rugby!
Carlisle were positive from the outset against this scratch Kendal team.
After 11 minutes Ryan scored the first try after good forward movement, from a five metre scrum. Unconverted.
Seven minutes later, Adam scored a second try, following a Kendal error which exposed weakness in their defence. Unconverted.
After 25 minutes, Henry scored a try on the right after good spun out passing movement. Unconverted.
On the stroke of half-time, Tom Fisher scored after an explosive burst of energy from the forwards, leading to four good passes for Tom to dive over. Unconverted.
At half – time, Carlisle 20, Kendal 0.
7 minutes into the second half, a smart feint from Dom opened a gap for Adam to score.
Henry duly converted.
After a further 3 minutes, fumbling errors by Carlisle’s defence allowed Kendal onto the score sheet, with a converted try.
JT reply 8 minutes later with a try from a 5 metre scrum. Unconverted.
With 5 minutes left to play, Kendal scored a second consolation try, after another Carlisle defensive error.
Kendal will be a force to be reckoned with once they have some more games under their belt if this hard fought game is any indicator.
Overall a good result for Carlisle, with improved rucking, more aggression and good distribution.
Man of the match was Dominic.
