Under 15’s v Tynedale
December 22, 2008 by admin
This fixture was rearranged to play at Tynedale, because the Warwick Road pitch was unplayable.
A depleted U15’s squad turned up with 5 recruits press-ganged from the U14’s (more of which later).
Carlisle started with a strong tail wind, and within a minute Adam had run from his own 22 to score. Henry converted.
Four minutes later, strong Tynedale forward play led to a try.
On eight minutes Jack Mitchell ran 50 metres to score under the posts allowing Henry another easy conversion.
Seven minutes later, Alex T broke from his own 22, gaining 60 metres before offloading to Adam for his second try, again converted by the ever reliable Henry.
Slick handling led to Jamie scoring in the 29th minute…again Henry obliged.
HALF TIME
Carlisle 28 – 5 Tynedale
In the second half, Carlisle knew they would be under the cosh as they turned to face the strong wind.
Tynedale scored down the right in the 3rd and 9th minutes to bring the score to 28 – 15.
Carlisle were then reduced to 14 men following a head wound to Alex T.
Some determined Carlisle rearguard action then followed as Tynedale pressed forward.
They scored again with 9 minutes remaining to bring the score to 28 – 20in Carlisle’s favour.
Carlisle held firm for the remainder of the match to maintain their nine-game unbeaten run.
Man of Match: Jack Stephenson
Special Mention and Thanks to the U14’s who slotted in so well to the team:
Jack Mitchell
Stuart Cannon
Jack Walker
Scott Hogarth

CARLISLE V ASPATRIA
Saturday, 20th December 2008
Local derbies always arouse passion and the fixture at Warwick Road on Saturday will be no exception. In the first exchange of the season at Bower Park in September, the black reds just edged it. Carlisle will be looking for revenge to maintain their progress ahead of Aspatria in the North 2 East table.
The centre partnership forged for the last match with Durham, Ross Olney and Chris Harris, is maintained. Harris has been consistent all season and Olney sent out signs that he wants to keep his place and is rewarded accordingly.
Wing berths are occupied by Barry Earl and Dan Holmes. Holmes has produced promising displays for the Crusaders recently and came of the bench against Durham for his first team debut. He did sufficient to encourage coach, Richard Metcalf, to reward him with a full debut.
George Graham takes over at scrum half from Ben Blain and he partners the Carlisle leading points scorer, Glen Weightman, who continues at outside half.
A change in the front row brings in Mark Allan for Martin McGimpsey (his wife is due to give birth on Saturday).
Mark Barron comes in on the flank for Bobby Sherlock with Matt Charters the other wing forward to support Lee Brumpton at eight.
The bench is made up of Martin Burnett (forwards) and Matt Rogers (backs) with recent signing, Nigel Arismandez, making up the trio of replacements.
Arismandez prefers playing at lock but is also comfortable in the centre.

Netherhall 15 pts v HORNETS 33 pts

Saturday, 13th December 2008
An inauspicious start to the day when, for the first time this season we travelled with a couple of players short. Domestic demands puts paid to the aspirations of some who were forced into Christmas shopping instead!
Netherhall fielded a strong XV and lent us a couple of lads to make up our team – the weakest of the season. After twenty minutes it looked like being a long afternoon, as at that stage we were 15 pts to 3 pts in arrears, and given the circumstances that was hardly a surprise.
The response of the lads was positive, especially the Colts who had travelled with us, and Cugi our NZ scrum half on loan from the hosts. He was probably the man of the match and ensured an ample supply of the ball, enabling us to recover in the second half to take the match by 15 pts to 33 pts.
Netherhall did not cede the game lightly. The result may look flattering, but for long periods in the second half our backs were to the wall, so credit to the lads who kept the wall in place to ensure no breaches in the second half.
Scorers for Hornets:
Tries:
Franny Dixon (2)
Cugi (1)
Conversions:
Chris Kersop (3)
Penalties:
Chris Kersop (4)

U15’s v Wigton
December 15, 2008 by admin
Flowing, attractive rugby, silky crowd pleasing passing moves, none of the above could be applied to today’s match!
Underfoot conditions were very heavy, and weather-enforced postponements meant that this was the first match for three weekends, match fitness was conspicuous by its absence.
However, Carlisle stretched their unbeaten run to eight games, doing it the hard way, winning ugly.
Ewan scored the first try in seven minutes, after good linking with Matt on the right. Wigton replied eight minutes later with a converted try by their fullback.
Carlisle replied immediately, when Adam grub kicked twice from forty metres to score near the posts allowing Macca an easy conversion.
The remainder of the first half saw sustained pressure by Carlisle go unrewarded thanks to some determined Wigton defending.
Half time. Carlisle 12 – Wigton 7
Eight minutes into the second half, Macca eased the pressure with a good burst from thirty-five metres to score under the posts and allow himself an easy conversion.
Wigton then scored twice (both unconverted) to bring the score back to 19-17 in favour of Carlisle.
Carlisle rallied again, good play by Corrie leading to neat handling close in for Ryan to score.
Adam consolidated for Carlisle with a trademark individual effort which started deep in his own half, touching down under the posts for an easy Macca conversion.
Wigton refused to lie down however, and their man of the match (full-back) completed his hat trick of tries which he duly converted.
In the dying seconds, a neat chip through by Alex Clark saw Corrie win the sprint for the corner, and score a well-deserved try.
Final score. Carlisle 36 – Wigton 24
Man of the match. Liam

Middlesbrough 13 v Crusaders 13
December 15, 2008 by admin
Filed under 2nd XV Match Reports
Saturday, 13th December.
Having done the double over ‘Boro last season, there was hopeful expectation that a similar feat might be on the cards this time round. It was not to be though and in the end, despite a spirited performance, the league spoils had to be shared. Given the circumstances that was probably a fair outcome.
The Crusaders started well enough in what was rapidly failing light, raising doubts that the game could be completed. Generally, the visitors were the more dominant, the pack doing well to get a plentiful supply of the backs to work on.
Carlisle opened their account with a penalty from ‘Dodge’ (Matt Rogers) and it remained that way for much of the half until the hosts equalised before Dan Holmes went over for a try in the left hand corner. It was too far for Rogers to add the conversion bonus.
Shortly before the break, young James Rocke went down with a neck injury that caused a considerable delay while he recveived medical attention before being taken by ambulance to the local casualty unit.
After the break Middlesbrough came more into the game and applied some early pressure and helped themselves to a brace of tries in the process.
The light was fading badly, and that despite floodlighting being put on to one side of the field only. Credit to both sides they played on manfully - perhaps just as well, as it enabled the Crusaders to equalise when Gareth Wylie went over.
The referee blew for time shortly afterwards, a wise decision, otherwise there was always the possibility of misunderstandings on both sides that could have led to a variety of problems.

Youth Rugby Grants
December 15, 2008 by admin

In times of financial stringency, the Club are extremely grateful for the support given to Youth Rugby by the Cumbria County Council Neighbourhood Forum’s in the Carlisle area.
The Club are pleased to receive this support to help with the extensive transport costs.
Our thanks are also due to Paul Diggle from our fund raising and sponsorship committee. Paul takes the time to go to each of the Neighbourhood Forum meetings to plead our case.
A lot of time and effort by volunteers goes into raising this much needed money, and we really appreciate Paul’s efforts for the cause.
