Flowing, attractive rugby, silky crowd pleasing passing moves, none of the above could be applied to today’s match!

Underfoot conditions were very heavy, and weather-enforced postponements meant that this was the first match for three weekends, match fitness was conspicuous by its absence.

However, Carlisle stretched their unbeaten run to eight games, doing it the hard way, winning ugly.

Ewan scored the first try in seven minutes, after good linking with Matt on the right. Wigton replied eight minutes later with a converted try by their fullback.

Carlisle replied immediately, when Adam grub kicked twice from forty metres to score near the posts allowing Macca an easy conversion.

The remainder of the first half saw sustained pressure by Carlisle go unrewarded thanks to some determined Wigton defending.

Half time. Carlisle 12 – Wigton 7

Eight minutes into the second half, Macca eased the pressure with a good burst from thirty-five metres to score under the posts and allow himself an easy conversion.

Wigton then scored twice (both unconverted) to bring the score back to 19-17 in favour of Carlisle.

Carlisle rallied again, good play by Corrie leading to neat handling close in for Ryan to score.

Adam consolidated for Carlisle with a trademark individual effort which started deep in his own half, touching down under the posts for an easy Macca conversion.

Wigton refused to lie down however, and their man of the match (full-back) completed his hat trick of tries which he duly converted.

In the dying seconds, a neat chip through by Alex Clark saw Corrie win the sprint for the corner, and score a well-deserved try.

Final score. Carlisle 36 – Wigton 24
