News for Saturday 31st Jan

Carlisle travel to the north east on Saturday to take on Gateshead in North 2 East. A tough encounter is in prospect, with Gateshead a hard nut to crack, particularly on their own middin’. Although, in the equivalent game last season, Carlisle were down by 30 plus pts to a few with only ten minutes remaining. The hosts were stunned by a revival that left even the faithful lost for words! An unlikely victory, after a game that Gateshead had controlled to a large degree.
Gateshead got their revenge though, with a narrow victory in the return fixture at Warwick Road.
This term Carlisle have the early advantage with the first of the two contests going Carlisle’s way at Warwick Road; so, expect an onslaught at Low Fell!
The Carlisle back division remains unchanged from the side that eclipsed Morpeth at Warwick Road last week. George Graham continues at scrum half after recovering from a head injury that caused him to be replaced by Max Connon in the second half. Connon did enough in his debut to keep a place in the squad and is on the bench as the back replacement.
Skipper, Steve Stamper is out and his place as a prop goes to utility forward, Mark Allan. Allan is a strong player and well capable of doing what is expected of him.
Injured number eight, Lee Brumpton misses out again and Mark Barron continues as his deputy with Bobby Sherlock and Matt Charters on the flanks of the pack.
Stylish lock forward, Aidan Day, has to be content again with a place on the bench after coming off a couple of weeks ago at Driffield. Martin Grealish who replaced him at Driffield has turned in some impressive performances and continues in that role and is partnered by Nigel Arismandez.
Loyal servant, Martin Burnett, travels to complete the bench. Seen as dependable and a safe pair of hands, he can always be relied on when the going gets tough.
CRUSADERS
The Crusaders will be glad of a game this week when they entertain Durham City in the Candy League. They had an enforced rest last week as the pitch was waterlogged in a sea of mud. Looking to get back on track after a reverse at Darlington MP a couple of weeks ago, they will; be trying to maintain their presence in the top echelons of their section of the league.
HORNETS
The Hornets too, were without a game last week. They should have travelled to Egremont on the Saturday but the hosts pulled the plug. A game with Silloth in the Cumbria Shield League was hastily brought forward as a substitute on the Sunday, but that too was cancelled because of the unfit pitches at Warwick Road. This week is listed as a free week with no game available for them in the Shield League. And, at that level, friendlies are becoming increasingly difficult to find!
COLTS
The Colts are travelling to Alnwick in the Northern Colts League, where they will be looking for points to improve their disappointing season so far. All is not as bad as it appears though. With a new crop of lads at colt’s level this season, it is taking time to weld them together as a unit and the omens for the future are good.

Porous Pitches, not at the moment
January 30, 2009 by admin
Problems are currently being experienced with the pitches at Warwick Road. Pitches 2 and 3 are particularly badly affected. For some reason, drainage is not as good as it should be and this is not helped by the amount of training that takes place over the course of a week.
We are here to play rugby, and every effort is being made to try and ensure that rugby can take place. Unfortunately, this means that some training has had to be sacrificed or, alternative facilities made available where possible.
Arrangements are being made for the paddock area behind the Squash Club to be marked out to help with junior rugby. Senior rugby are making varied and alternative provisions where practical.
Please bear with us – we are trying to do our best.

Cougars v York RI

Another convincing win from the Cougars bolstered their confidence ahead of a long wait until their next fixture. Coaching from Cockermouth’s Jonny Taylor has clearly had an impact on the side, who put in a more organised and measured performance.
This was the first meeting between these 2 sides and the visitors took the game straight to the Yorkshire side with great pressure from the kick off forcing errors in an attacking position. Cougars broke the deadlock with a clever pick-up and dive from Scrum half Philippa Bell at the back of a York scrum. At the restart, a minor lapse of concentration from the Carlisle outfit allowed York the space and time to retaliate by shipping quick ball down the line to their speedy outside centre who touched down on the far right. Jolted back into gear, Carlisle came back harder and faster.
Strong running by the Carlisle forwards especially players player of the match Sarah Elsy and coaches player Laura Cunningham, sucked the opposition numbers in, leaving the backs time to get set and work their magic. Katie Marinner, partnered with outside centre Jenny Postlethwaite picked their way through the gaps all day long, running sharp lines and making some fantastic dummy runs. After a couple of forward phases up the right midfield, Postlethwaite, cut back inside side stepping and offsetting the York defence with ease, off-loaded out of a tackle to put Captain Lucy Meadley free on the left side to score her 1st of the game.
This strong running and excellent support play was present all game for the Cougars and resulted in the Cougars 3rd try from flanker Belinda Lloyd who scored in the right corner after sustained pressure from the Cougars. Carlisle continued to exploit the gaps they created- to the best effect by Meadley who scored on the end of a magnificent run up half the pitch and inched over the try line after a failed attempt to stop her.
Carlisle continued to keep the work rate up in the second half and again pushed and kept play in the opposition territory. Cougars had many chances which went unconverted and this is something they intend to work on before our next league game in 3 weeks time which is the return game with York. A penalty 10 metres out gave Meadley the chance to claim her first hat trick of the season with a drive through the defensive line. The match ended with a final onslaught of the York defence that only just denied Postletwaite a try. As deserving as the win was, Carlisle know the difference should have been greater and they will be looking to work on this in the oncoming months.

Carlisle 9 v Morpeth 7

Two more points on the climb up the North 2 East table was a just outcome for Carlisle from a tense and powerful battle at Warwick Road. About the only thing in common between the two clubs, was the fact that they had both sufferred destruction and devastation on a massive scale in recent years, at the hands of severe flooding.
Carlisle were forced into making some changes to their starting line up. Lock Aidan Day was still feeling a shoulder injury that forced him off at Driffield; Martin Grealish deputised. Lee Brumpton had pulled out after a training mishap and Mark Barron moved to eight with Matt Charters moving from the wing to flanker. Ross Olney, back from injury, slotted in on the wing.
Morpeth arrived in the city obviously bouyed by their win in the game in the north east earlier in the season, when they comfortably dealt with a feeble Carlisle challenge. How different is was this time though! Although Morpeth had the benefit of the early exchanges, they were unable to breach the Carlisle defence.
Within 10 minutes, the city side really got into their stride and kept Morpeth busy in defence as they tried hard to breach the line with some powerful upfield surges. Although not playing particularly well, the pack did enough to suggest that tries would be the eventual outcome. Lengthy periods in the Morpeth 22 area were frustrated by an equally determined defence that managed to keep the home XV at bay.
Carlisle should have done more to press home an advantage, with the cause being helped when the visitors were down to at least fourteen men, and on occasions thirteen players, because Morpeth seemed to enjoy populating the sin bin throughout the game – with four visits in all!
Carlisle had to rely on the boot of fly half, Glen Weightman who slotted a penalty on twenty minutes, although he missed two others, one either side!
The game slipped into the first half injury period and it looked as though the Warwick Road men would have to settle for a slim advantage at that point. But, as happened in Yorkshire last week, lapses in concentration allowed Morpeth up field for the first time since the opening minutes; and aided by some sloppy tackling, Stewart Hills, their left winger touched down and fly half Matthew Jinks added the conversion bonus.
Half time – game really on at 3 pts to 7 pts!
In the second half Carlisle turned up the tempo and continued to take the game to Morpeth but were unable to turn their clear superiority into points, a problem that they have encountered in many games this season.
On forty six minutes they relied on Weightman to close the gap with another penalty before losing scrum half George Graham with a head injury. He was replaced by Max Connon, a youngster tasting senior rugby for the first time. Connon produced an encouraging display for his first outing, and his probing and sleight of movement clearly confused his opponents on occasions and in support of the cause.
Weightman had the opportunity to add to his points tally with another penalty on the seventy minute mark but put attempt fell well short. Carlisle applied huge pressure on the Morpeth line in the closing stages of the match to try and give the scoreline a reflection of their effort, but the best they could muster was another penalty from Weightman.
Perhaps not a pretty game, but Carlisle deserved their victory, albeit a narrow one.

Carlisle Colts 28 Northern Colts 8
Carlisle made it three wins from three in 2009 with a comprehensive win over a resurgent Northern in the Saturday Colts league. The visitors were strong and determined and scored first with a try from strong forwards running. But Carlisle came back strongly and Aidan Hermeston touched down following a blindside move from a scrum; Steven Benson converted. A great break from the halfway by centre Karem Moulem saw him go all the way for the second try, again converted by Benson for a 14-5 half-time lead.
In the second Carlisle began to play the offloading game they have been working hard on in training and its effectiveness was immediately obvious. Tom Martin went over for a try following great support work throughout the team early in the second half which Benson converted for a 21-5 advantage. Nothern continued to battle gamely and reduced arrears with a penalty, but Carlisle continued to dominate and Moulem added a second try for himself and fourth team score to seal the win and an impressive start to 2009 for the Carlisle Colts.

Team News for 25th Jan 2009

Carlisle rely on the same team that started the game at Driffield last week for the visit of Morpeth. The visitors are on equal league points to Carlisle but are one place ahead on the points scored differential.
In the autumn match in the north east, Carlisle hardly “got off the bus” and put in a disappointing performance.
Stephane Helies, who had a good game against his former team mates in Yorkshire continues at full back.
Centre are Liam Nicholls and Chris HArris at 12 & 13 respectively with Matt Charters on the right wing and Dan Holmes keeping his slot at 11 after his full debut last week.
Aidan Day comes back into the second row after going off injured last week. He displaces the unlucky Martin Grealish who deputised ably at Driffield. He has a place on the bench.
Nigel Arismandez continues at five and the flankers are Mark Barron and Bobby Sherlock, with Lee Brumpton as pivot.
Mark Allan and Martin Plummer make up the bench.
For the full team look under 1st XV “team selection”.
The Crusaders are at home too, to Morpeth Reivers, and will be seeking to improve on their disappointing showing at Darlington Mowden Park last week. The Reivers will be seeking to avenge a narrow defeat on their own turf earlier in the season so the Crusaders will need to be on their mettle.
For the full team selection look under Crusaders “team selection”.
The Hornets are away at Egremont in the Cumbria Shield League and doubtless will help their hosts to celebrate the official opening of the new clubhouse at Bleach Green.

Cougars 19 v Scunthorpe 0

The long Christmas break had obviously worked up the Cougar appetite for this match. It was the first match of the year, on the back of one training session since the break and the weather took a turn for the worse at the kick-off. Not a favourable set of circumstances for the home team.
The first half got underway with some great defensive play from the hosts, which the Cougars managed to sustain throughout the rest of the game. Nerve testing pressure was applied on Scunthorpe at each break down forcing the penalties.
The first points to go on the board came from a penalty try given to scrum-half Philippa Bell. A chip and chase just outside the 22 allowed the break away up the left wing into open field. A stunning run was illegally disrupted and the penalty try awarded, which was successfully converted by stand-off Lisa Ritchie.
The visitors never seemed to get into their stride, and Carlisle were keen to take the game to them. Lock Rosie Tyson (Coaches Player) put in a big performance, working hard all over the park, making some big tackles and cleaning up loose ball efficiently. On such a boggy and unforgiving pitch, winger Caroline Dinwoodie also did admirably to pick up the pace when the opportunities came.
At the break, substitutions were made in the pack, which had a notable impact. Flanker Belinda Lloyd came in to flank and Sam Meakin moved from Number 8 to prop. A wheeling scrum made it hard to win the put ins, but the strengthened pack worked hard to clear the ball out fast. Play was pushed back deep into the opposition half where quick ball from a ruck allowed prop and Captain, Lucy Meadley to break through the defence, popping the ball back inside to centre Holly Freestone (Player’s Player) who touched down just left of the posts.
The last quarter saw some strong forward running that drew in the Scunthorpe defence opening up gaps out wide. After recycling the ball through several phases, quick ball from the scrum-half went down the line to Meadley who broke through to score again before Ritchie added the conversion points.
The visitors never really looked threatening, though a couple of breaks were made in the dying moments. However, the Cougar grit and determination lasted until the final whistle to hold the visitors to a nil score line. The next game will be the last away league fixture against York on Sunday 25th January.
