Carlisle Colts 19 Westoe Colts 16

Having got off the mark winwise the previous Saturday, Carlisle showed that it was no flash in the pan with a first league win of the campaign courtesy of a stunning 15 minute purple patch midway through the first half.

Our visitors from the North-East had started strongly had looked very dominant in the forwards with a clever fly-half dictating operations. They deservedly went ahead on 10 mintes with a well worked forwards try that was converted. They were pressing for a second score deep into the Carlisle 22 when a turnover near their own was adventurously run wide out of defence by Carlisle. David Milbourne made the intial break and offloaded to Aidan Hermeston in space who raced clear and looked certain to score. Scrambling Westoe defence hauled him down just short but Stuart Bulman was follwing up and secured possesion to score the try himself. Steven Benson converted. This inspired Carlisle to play there best rugby of the season to date, with forwards and backs beginning to link well. Centre Keiron Little broke down the middle and when it was recycled quickly and moved left Reece Bone took a great line to score near the posts; Benson again converted. Straight from the kick off Carlisle acored again. Little and Bone were the main architects exchanging passses from an initial Little break before Little finished it off. A 19-7 lead was the unlikley scoreline after the visitors had dominated. They reduced arrears just before half time with a penalty.

In the second half Westoe fought hard with the wind advantage to get back in the game. But Carlisle defended resolutely and limited the visitors efforts to two penalties. In the end the home side deserved there first league win and after a slow start the season is really beginning to take off.
