Carlisle v Morpeth Colts

Carlisle Colts 37    Morpeth Colts 7

The Colts comfortbaly beat at home a side that had beaten them narrowly earlier in the season. Make no mistake this was a true measure of the improvement made by this squad of players over the course of the season.

Morpeth arrived with only 14 players and we quickly agreed to make up their numbers. Ross Allan (out best player in recent weeks) and Stphen Hodgkinson (our team captain!) volunteered to have a half each for the visitors. This would allow our 4 U16s who were making their Colts debuts to remain with there team.

Morpeth were no bad side, it was just that at times Carlisle were very good. It was 17-0 at half time with tries from  Reece Bone, Keiron Little, and Tom Earl. In the second half Morpeth did get on the scoresheet with a breakout try from their impressive full back, but was Carlisle who continued to impress with their handling skills and pace of game. Further tries came at regular intervals from Reece Bone and Keiron Little again, the returning Ross Allan and finally Stuart Bulman.

That makes it three league wins from four in 2009. We may not win the title but at the moment we are the form side of the division!

Ilkley v Carlisle

Saturday, 28th February 2009

Carlisle travel to The Dales on Saturday for a re-arranged league game  -  one that was postponed in January after arriving at the ground!

Despite being rooted to the basement league slot, Ilkley will be no push over, particularly on their own “middin”.  Although they have not picked up too many league points, several of their games have been close encounters, and if Carlisle are to get anything from the match, then they will have to up their peformance after the defeat at Penrith last week.

Carlisle make a number of changes, the most notable of which is the introduction of Sedbergh School and England under 18 star, Matt Shields as blind side flanker.

Matt Charters, outstanding and man of the match in the last two games moves from the flank to number eight with both Lee Brumpton and Mark Barron injured.  Bobby Sherlock completes the back row on the open side.

Aidan Day and Nigel Arismandez make up the second row.

The regular front row is a little uncertain.  There is some doubt about the fitness of Tom Graham who injured his sternum at Penrith.  He will be subject to a late fitness test, with John Bowman standing by to take over.  Otherwise, Bowman will be on the bench. Steve Stamper (skipper) and Martin McGimpsey are the props.

Ben Blain and Glen Weightman are at scrum and fly half respectively.

A bit of a shake up in the backs sees Stephane Helies moving to one wing with Barry Earl on the other.  Max Connon keeps the full back berth after replacing Helies in the second half at Penrith.

Ross Olney returns at inside centre to partner ever present Chris Harris who grabbed himself a brace of tries at Winter’s Park last week and was unlucky not to get a hat trick!

Definitely on the bench will be Richard Bearchell (forwards) and George Graham (backs) with Bowman taking the third place if Tom Graham come through the fitness test.

Cumbria hosts girls’ competition

February 24, 2009 by admin

Cumbria is to host representative women’s and girl’s rugby for the first time.

Sunday saw the first regional representative girl’s rugby ever played in Cumbria, and there is more to follow. The same fixture North East Versus North West in the women’s competition will be hosted at Penrith RUFC in March. The venue has been selected by the RFUW this season, in its quest to use neutral grounds for the competition for the first time.

Both games yesterday were competitive and played in the spirit of the game of rugby. The North West, though took all the points, wining 34:0 at Under 18s and 36:0 at Under 15s level. The North West played fast, attacking rugby, looking for gaps, running and carrying hard, and then distributing the ball wide. They also kicked into space and chased well. Especially impressive was their discipline to keep a steep attacking line and to support the ball carrier. The North east on the other hand, were better drilled at rucking and mauling, retaining their own ball well.

This fixture is extra special to Cumbria as a result of the geography of the county as players chose which region they would like to represent. Yesterday saw two Carlisle RUFC team mates at the under 18s level; Jes Barnes and Emma Sutton play against each other for North West and North East respectively.  Caitlin Nugent (also of Carlisle RUFC) played for the North east at the Under 15s age band. Furness RUFC fielded 5 girls for the North West at Under 18s and one at Under 15. Despite the sparcity of clubs and problems with player recruitment to girl’s rugby, Cumbria are fielding a high proportion of girls at this representative level.

The women’s fixture to be played on 15th March will be a re-match of last years 3rd/4th place play off in the regional competition. Cumbria were represented well in the North East last year, and for the first time the region were strong at this level, losing only to the overall winners West Midlands. This year Carlisle Cougars captain Lucy Meadley, and players Sarah Elsy and Philippa Bell, along with Katie Wigham (former Carlisle Cougar, now of Premiership ‘Team Northumbria’) have been selected to represent the North East region. The start of the competition has been delayed for the North East due to weather affecting the pitches and the late withdrawal of Yorkshire from the competition.

Katie Wilson (RFUW volunteer coordinator) said

“It is great for Cumbria that the girls and women are being selected to play rugby at a regional level. There is some real talent in Cumbria, and the game is a lot of fun to be involved in at all levels. We would like to thank the RFUW for using neutral venues for this competition this season. It will be a great opportunity to see and support women’s rugby in Cumbria”.

Kick off is 2.00pm, entry is free. The next year is an exciting one in the women’s game as London will host the 2010 World Cup.

Anyone wishing to know more about women’s and girls rugby in Cumbria please get in touch with Katie Wilson on 07941 852352 or email katie.j.wilson@hotmail.co.uk.”

Penrith 42 v Carlisle 13

Saturday 21st February 2009

Penrith got the revenge they were looking for at Winters Park in this return fixture, after losing at Carlisle in November.  The city side put on a display that probably matched their poorest effort of the season at Morpeth!

Winter’s Park lived up to it’s name with the elements apparently taking a toll on the visitor’s with their game blown completely off course!

Carlisle seemed reluctant to deal with the Penrith danger man, fly half Steve Wood, who was allowed too much freedom to dictate the match for Penrith.  Apart from his undoubted outfield skills, Wood landed three penalties within the first seventeen minutes to put Carlisle on the back foot.

Glen Weightman slotted over a drop goal from 25 metres midway through the opening period but unusually, he fluffed other opportunities that came his way during the game.

There were brief flurries of activity from Carlisle who, on the few occasions that they got into their stride, threatened the Penrith line, but were unable to finish off, and their efforts were further frustrated when hooker Tom Graham had to leave the field after getting a nasty knock.  Mark Allan came off the bench to deputise.

At the break Penrith had a comfortable lead at 23 pts to 3 pts but in the second period they had to work a bit harder with Carlisle getting themselves into the game a little more, but not enough to give them hope of getting anything from the game.

After the break they brought on Max Connon for Stephane Helies at full back and Nigel Arismandez replaced Gareth Wylie in the pack.

Penrith had reached the 30 point mark before Carlisle made a concerted effort to reduce the arrears.  Outside centre Chris Harris, one of the bright sparks of the city side, got himself two well worked tries on forty two and seventy three minutes, and was unlucky not to get his hat trick.

Local derbies are always tense affairs and this one at Winters Park will be no different.  Penrith will be looking for revenge after being roundly beaten at Warwick Road in the autumn, when the Carlisle pack dominated.

Carlisle 14 v Old Crossleyans 20

Saturday, 14th February 2009

The Old Crocs from Halifax went to the top of league following this encounter at Warwick Road after snapping at the heels of Carlisle in the second half.

In the opening period of the game,  after getting into their stride after a hesitant opening few minutes, the Cumbrians were by far the better team and ought to have had more points on the board for their efforts.

Stand off Glen Weightman had a chance to land a penalty on twenty two minutes but put it past the far post.

The only points of the first half came with a try from the young outside centre, Chris Harris just beyond the half hour mark and Weightman added the conversion.

Carlisle were comfortable with the thought that, after the break, they could improve their slender lead, but the visitors had other ideas.

It was Carlisle who went further in front on 46 minutes when left wing Barry Earl, touched down after a great move amongst the backs, with Weightman improving.

Crossleyans were shocked into action by this second reverse and gradually took the game to Carlisle, with the host side eventually succumbing to two goals and two penalties, leaving the city side to reflect on what should have been!

Overall, Carlisle just edged the domination stakes, and some of the visiting supporters acknowledged that Carlisle gave the game away at 14 – 20, allowing a return to the top perch for the Crocs.

Old Crossleyans are the visitors to Warwick Road this weekend.  Lying second in the table they will be looking to consolidate and keep ahead of Penrith.

In the autumn, at Halifax, Carlisle were unlucky to lose and will be wanting to atone for a defeat that was a touch unjust!

Carlisle rely basically on the team that was selected to meet Aspatria last week, although there are couple of changes due to unavailabilities.

Stephane Helies resumes at full back with recent debutant Max Connon unavailable due to a committment made before he came onto the 1st XV scene.

Martin Grealish is unavailable in the second row, so Aidan Day gets his place back after going off injured at Driffield.  Day will be aiming to make sure he keeps his slot.
