Saturady 28th February 2009

The Colts visited north east neighbours Northern Saturday 28th, with a squad made up mainly of under 17s plus Jon Walker & Elliot McDermott form the under 16s. The youthful looking squad (including me) lifting Northern’s expectation for the challenge ahead, well judging book  covers & all that !!!

Carlisle settled quicker then the hosts getting into a game plan almost from the kick off. Two or three attacks up the middle then we moved it wide, this paid dividends after 10 minutes when Tom Ritchie gathered the ball about 20 meters in form touch just inside his own half, sold two dummies & ran in under the posts, Steven Benson added the conversion.

The next 5 minutes were played in midfield until Northern capitalised on a Carlisle error plus a couple of missed tackles, allowed Northern to run in under the posts for a converted try. This was all encouragement the home side needed & managed to take control of the game helped by Carlisle’s frustration, giving away a few penalties,Northern took advantage & scored a second try again converted 7-14 down with 5 minutes to half time.Northern’s heads were now well up & pushed into the Carlisle 22 again,a couple of scrums from knock on’s pushed Carlisle back to 10 meters,as Northern made a break for the line Adian Hermiston came off the wing, his tackle on the Northern 8 a couple of meters short was enough to spring the ball loose & our line was cleared from the resulting scrum.

Half time & words weren’t minced stick to our game plan, cut out the mistakes & penalties & do what we do best.

Unfortunately the first 10 didn’t go as planned allowing the Northern cetnre space & time to score in the corner, conversion missed 19-7.

Sterner talk with a few choice suggestion & the plan can still work. The next 20 minutes saw Carlisle at their best,The back row of Ross Allen (m.o.m) Matty Cullen & Tom Ritchie set about the park, continual support from Graham Rayson Liam Mullholland James Johnston & John Graham pushed Northern back time & time again,Stephen Hodgkinson & Martyn McLean were  on top off their game, hitting Northern right then left from ruck after ruck, the platform was set time after time,James Rooke was like a terrier with a bone,he was all over the defence 9,Rocky released the ball left, quick hands from Steven Benson to Stuart Bullman,on to Jamie MacIntosh,Joe Pennington came onto Jamie`s inside pass at pace & the Northern line was breached,Benson tagged the conversion 19-14.

A request for no mistake from the kick off sunk in with a thrust from Rayson & we were back over the 10 meter line, five or six phases & moved left again, ball dropped back & fell into open play,Adian Hermiston who hadn`t seen the ball for a while put his body on  the line falling on the ball then back to his feet driving the covering defence backwards, the back row appeared again form the five meter on the line left over to the right in the blink of an eye,Rocky picks from the base of the ruck, held on & on as Benson timed his run into the gap,try number three, bursting with confidence Benson converts with ease.

Mullholland collects the restart, pop to Allen at pace & back go Northern again,Northern hands come into the ruck & the ball booted into Carlisle 22,The question asked from Carlisle was simple enough but what the “F” Didn’t help, Northern penalty,& opt for the lineout 10 meters or so from the line,Hodg steals it but were pinned for a push at the back of the line, deeper into the corner with minutes left,Northern catch & drive but the Carlisle pack batter them back, turn over by Matty Cullen but gets pushed into touch, ref see another infringement as Northern take a quick tap but not quick enough as Bully has his line organised,Northern pick & go but were still organised & turn it over with just enough time for Benson to clear his lines.

Hell of of a day out lads with some of the best rugby i`ve seen you play.

Jon Walker & Elliot Macdermott Were a credit to Mike Howe & his team they handled the game time very well.

Final score Northern 19 Carlisle 29
