We weren’t sure what to expect of Ponteland especially as our squad was depleted due to county development commitments, we were missing 6 players. The match was played on the second pitch, the tactic of hiding the grass under mud worked well!

The game got off to a great start, 2 minutes in Jamie, from good ball down the line scored in the corner (not converted). 15 minutes in from good running Alex C scored a good try under the posts (Macca converted). Ponteland’s defence was poor and we made the most of it, although the referee was very strict, especially with Carlisle which resulted in Josh being sent off for holding on to the ball! Some comments overheard in the crowd indicated that perhaps the ref was being a little harsh, especially when penalised for numerous forward passes!

First half score Carlisle 19 Ponteland 0

2 minutes into the second half and Adam, through strong running, scathed throught poor defecne to score under the posts (Macca converted). Close to the opposition’s try line a well controlled scrum gave Alex C the opportunity to pick up and down the blind side, run to score a try in the corner (not converted). The last 15 minutes were a little messy with more pressure coming from Ponteland, but Carlilse defended very well, with Ryan (fb) making some good try saving tackles and good work especially from the forwards so close to our own line. Eventaully the ball was kicked away, game over. Overall a good win by Carlise, although I think the score should have been higher. Some relatively new players showed their worth.
