Everything seemed perfect for this Friday tea-time County Cup semi-final fixture: the weather was gorgeous, we had all players fit and available, the pitch was in great nick. All that was missing was ever-present chief cheerleader, bon viveur and legend…Sue McMann, absent for her first game of the season! This was to prove vital…………

Penrith came out of the blocks with all guns blazing, powerful forward play resulting in a try under the posts, which was converted after 4 minutes.

Carlisle then had sustained pressure in the Penrith half for the next 15 minutes, which remained unrewarded due to a solid home defence.

Penrith gained a penalty during a rare foray into the Carlisle half and kicked easily to increase the score to 10-0.

After 26 minutes Carlisle pressure was rewarded with a penalty that Macca converted to make the score at half-time 10-3 to the hosts.

The second half began equally tightly contested, however Penrith tries after 11 and 15 minutes (1 converted), put the game beyond reach for Carlisle.

Carlisle heads did not drop though…………….and they continued to contest every ball, the pressure being finally rewarded with a consolation try by JT after a typically strong run. The ref blew for full time before a conversion was possible.

Final score Carlisle 8 – Penrith 22.
