Carlisle Colts 31v Percy Park Ac 5

A comprehensive and deserving win over a side often in the hunt for honours at seasons end. They key to this victory was Carlisle’s dominance at the breakdown and Carlisle’s ability to turn over the visitors seemingly at will. The scoreline perhaps did not reflect Park’s efforts throughout the game, but neither did it flatter Carlisle.
It was Park who had the early pressure, profiting from a Carlisle error receiving the kick off. park should have scored after creating space wide right, but Carlisle full back Ellis Little made a try saving tackle, a feat he was to repeat twice further during the game. Indeed throughout the match home defence was outstanding, and they were a constant danger breaking out from tunover ball. Ross Allen scored the first try on eight minutes from Carlisle’s first incursion into the Park 22, the forwards retaining possesion well before the ball was moved right for the centr to crash through. Three mintes later it was is centre partner Steven Benson who scored the second, profiting from a breakout involving Ritchie, Little, and Billett as Park were turned over again; John Walker added the conversion. A period of Park pressure was repelled with impressive defensive organisation before a third try was scored on 24 minutes by Adam Robertson, again following an impressive attack after turnover ball won. Carlisle could have added a fourth try before half time, but Kyle Fisher just edged the touchline evazding a defender.
With lineouts and scrums even the visitors were always in the game. But the second half followed the pattern of the first with Carlisle dominating the breakdown area and retaining control of the match. Carl Robertson added a fouth try on 37 minutes; a trademark catch and drive superbly contolled from just inside the Park 22; Kyle Fisher adding a super conversion from wide right. Park dominated possession in the final 15 minutes as Carlisle began to tire, but determined defence prevented a score. In contrast the hosts were clinical when the opportunity arose and wing Ian Billet capped an impressive all round display with a try on 65 minutes converted by Walker. Percy Park never gave up and were rewarded with a consolation score from Arron Cottingham in the final minute.
Many thanks to Park for their generous comments after the game; there efforts were not reflected in the result. Next week the Colts travel to Wigton for what will be a tough match against the team that beat us in last seasons County Cup final.

In the first league game of the new season Carlisle came up against a strong an well organised Billingham side and were unlucky not to come away with win. This was a tight game all round with the result in doubt right to the end. Tries from Carl Robertson and Matthew Cullen kept Carlisle in the game and we trailed on 13-10 going into the final minutes. Despite intense pressure we could not get the required score and Billingham broke out to seal the the win.

Carlisle Colts 13 v Austin Friars 27
September 30, 2009 by admin
There are now excellent links between Austin Friars and the Club, and were delighted to to be offered the chance to open Friars newly relaid 1st XV pitch which was in excellent condition despite heavy rain the preceding couple of days. The Colts contained a few former Friars pupils, which no doubt added spice to what is always a keenly contested game.
With both teams using the as a warm up game the match was split into three 25 minute periods. The first period was largely dominated by Friars, whose backs were a constant danger. Friars included current Ireland U18 stand off Grant Connon in their line-up and he was influential throughout; finding a gap on seven minutes and jinking in for the first try which he also converted. Carlisle had the more impressive forwards, but lacked a cutting edge behind. Stevene Benson and Connon traded penalties to complete the first periods scoring.
The second period saw the Carlisle forwards get on top, but not before that man Connon extended Friars lead with his second try and conversion. The Colts by then had learnt to keep the ball away from their hosts back division and good ball retention and driving saw them control the second period, being rewarded with two tries of their own through Kyle Fisher and Adam Robertson, the latter an U16 in his Colts debut.
At 17-13 going into the third period the result was in the balance. But in the third period the Carlisle pack were unable to maintain their dominance and the Friars pack won enough possession to release the pressure and allow their backs to break out. Connon extended the Friars lead with a penalty and their victory was confirmed with a Matthew Minnett try 5 minutes from time.
Altogether an encouraging workout for both teams as the prepare for the new season. When they combine post Christmas as one side for Carlisle Colts they could be a real force to be reckoned with.

Carlisle U14’s v Kirkby Lonsdale

Carlisle’s Under 14’s first home game of the season against Kirkby Lonsdale started with Carlisle in dominant fashion with Carlisle’s backs cutting through Kirkby Lonsdale’s defense leading to the first try of the game by Tom Coulthard after 3 minutes. Straight from kick-off, good handling by the backs lead to Matt Hawley going over for the second try, Brett Connon converted.
Kirkby Lonsdale then took the game to Carlisle through the forwards with the Carlisle pack frequently loosing the ball at the breakdown. A 12 minute break by Carlisle backs led to Brett Connon scoring near the posts which he then converted.
Kirkby Lonsdale kicked off the 2nd half with Joel Davidson catching the ball and setting on a 60 metre run down into the Kirkby Lonsdale 22, before being tackled into touch. From the line out Carlisle won the ball and strong driving by the forwards led to Tom Fuller going over for Carlisle’s 4th try which was again converted by Brett Connon.
This inspired Kirkby Lonsdale into life and with some strong forward play and good running from the backs, they crossed the line on 3 minutes for a converted try by Jack.
The fight back continued from Kirkby Lonsdale with Robert Helm going over for another converted try 2 minutes later. Carlisle then responded with another 2 tries of their own, the first from James Robson and the second from Tom Coulthard.
In the flucturating style of the 2nd half, Kirkby Lonsdale fought back with another two tries from Brendan Cleary and Jack.
Strong pressure from the Carlisle pack in the final minutes of the game led to Matt Hawley crossing for his second try of the game.

Carlisle 37 v Darlington 15

Filed under 1st XV Match Reports, Featured
The Warwick Road side continued to build on the previous weeks success over Old Brodleians, with the comprehensive dispatch of Darlington to their second defeat in two weeks.
Darlington used be to the annual opening fixture for Carlisle prior to the onset of league rugby, and whilst it pleasant to renew some old acquaintances, sentiment was left in the clubhouse during the match whilst Carlisle went about, for the most part, a competent demolition of their visitors. Except for a fifteen minute spell after the break when the north east side exerted more than a little pressure, Carlisle were in little danger and were good value for their ultimate victory – a win that lifted them from bottom of the pile to fifth in the league in a little over of the week. Not to be complacent though, there is still a lot of work to do, but there are clear signs of improvement after the slow start to the campaign.
Having started the reduction of the their poor points differential last week, Carlisle succeeded in further reducing the arrears to just minus 2 with Saturday’s victory.
Carlisle opened their scoring spree when, after three minutes, fly half Glen Weightman landed an easy penalty awarded for an offside infringement. Wingman Dan Holmes scored a fine try out wide in the ninth minute and although Weightman couldn’t manage the wide conversion, he took a further three points when Carlisle were awarded a penalty when the visitors were adjudged to be “crossing”.
Whether a touch of complacency crept into the home side is a matter of opinion, but they allowed their visitors back into the game when some loose defence allowed Darlington a couple of tries in the right hand corner. Luckily for Carlisle both conversions went astray. With the warning signs there, Carlisle re-galvanised themselves and in the closing five minutes of the half, full back Max Connon and outside centre Chris Harris grabbed themselves a fine try apiece and Weightman slotted both conversions to give his side what looked to be an unassailable 25 pts to 10 pts lead at half time.
After the break it looked as though it was Darlington who had benefitted from the rest; they really came into the game and put Carlisle under concerted pressure for a lengthy spell during which they added a third unconverted try, but not before the Carlisle flanker, Bobby Sherlock, had been sin binned.
On the hour Carlisle had to take Weightman off with an arm injury and as consequence the backs had to be reorganised; Ross Olney came into the centre with George Graham moving to fly half. The city side were kept under pressure in their own twenty two area for a few more minutes. Darlington were frustrated in more ways than one, with Graham becom ing the focus of their attention, but unfortunately for him, it was he who sufferred when he who was binned after a bit of a melee.
Now down a man, Carlisle clearly realised that they had to redouble their efforts to regain the territorial initiative. Gradually, they worked their way upfield and Harris claimed a fine individual try between the post - Connon converted.
With four minutes remaining, Dan Smithson came off the bench to replace Gareth Wylie (who had a solid game in the second row) and with probably his first touch of the ball, went over for the final try to close the game at 37 pts to 12 pts.

The Cumbria Rugby Union website was changed over earlier in the year to run via the RFU RugbyFirst System. This has resulted in the link being less than user friendly and a more appropriate link is being sought.
A poster is attached promoting the site which can be displayed in your respective clubs/environments. If you have your own website please ensure to use the link http://clubs.rfu.com/Clubs/portals/CumbriaRFULtdCB
The site is being updated regularly and is still ‘under development’ but they are managing to post more information on a daily basis. It is also a vital tool to keep parents informed of session cancellations as a first port of call.
