The visit of Penrith for the first full competative game of the season was eagerly anticipated..Carlisle had a score to settle after their County Cup defeat in April.

Penrith started strongly, pinning Carlisle back in their own 22 for 10 minutes, only solid defence preventing a score.
The pressure was relieved when Jordie C made a great kick and chase down the left, only a bad bounce preventing a score.
Minutes later, a penalty was awarded in front of the Penrith posts, which “new boy” Mike Fearon duly kicked to give Carlisle the lead.

After 17 minutes, Dom emerged from a mass of bodies to sprint 35 yards for a try, which narrowly went unconverted.
The rest of the half was tightly contested, with no further clear-cut scoring chances.

Half-time     Carlisle 8 – 0 Penrith

The beginning of the second half was equally close. Carlisle was awarded a penalty in good field position, only for it to be reversed thanks to some unnecessary verbal indiscipline towards the referee.
Shortly afterwards, a good chip over the Carlisle back line allowed Penrith to score under the posts, the conversion bringing the score to 8-7.

Carlisle then came back strongly, and excellent handling in the line allowed Alex Clark to score..13-7.
Penrith were not finished however, and a virtual replica of their first try brought the score to 13-12.
With only seconds on the clock..the whole ground held its breath as the conversion attempt came back off the left hand post!
Carlisle then ran down the clock for a narrow, but well deserved victory.

Final score.. Carlisle 13 – 12 Penrith
Referee’s man of the match – Mike Fearon
