Carlisle started quickly….good passing along the backs saw Jamie Harrison take a pass on his bootlaces and sprint for the line. He was tackled just short, however an infringement shortly after by Darlington led to a penalty virtually in front of the posts, which Mike Fearon kicked.
Darlington replied almost immediately, with a breakaway try from their left winger, scoring under the posts to bring the score to 7 – 3 in favour of the visitors.
A hard fought midfield tussle then ensued, with Carlisle having a couple of try-scoring opportunities……..only for white line fever to appear when overlaps were available.
Referee Martin Plummer was kept busy with infringements, and was forced to “sin bin” the Darlington centre for dangerous play.
Carlisle then pressurised the depleted visitors, but could not make their one man advantage pay.
Half time      Carlisle 3 – 7 Darlington
The second half began quickly again, with Carlisle pinning back Darlington in their own 22.
Roles were then reversed, and good defence from Carlisle was needed as Darlington won a selection of scrums within touching distance of the home line.
There was then some end to end action with no clear cut chances, before Jamie Harrison was forced to make the tackle of the game to prevent a try by the speedy Darlington winger.
Susutained pressure by Darlington led however to a second converted try.
Carlisle fought back……….sustained pressure was matched by solid defence, and chance after chance was repelled.
Tom Ibbotson made it over the line, but was held up, and another “try” was called back for a forward pass.
Further Darlington indiscipline led to a second yellow card, but Carlisle again were unable to press home their advantage……..so a hard fought game ended

Carlisle 3 – 14 Darlington
