It was apparent from the welcome that we got (BRRRR), and the eavesdropped pre-match home “pep talk”, that this was going to be a bruising encounter!
Keswick were determined to avenge previous defeats.
The first quarter saw Keswick pinned back near or behind their own 22. Eventually after several near things from the Carlisle forwards, Alex Clark drove over for a well-deserved try.
Further Carlisle pressure went unrewarded, when after 22 minutes, a Keswick breakaway against the run of play, led to a 90m run by their winger, for a score under the posts, which was converted, to make the score 7-5 to the hosts.
A nasty eye injury, saw Carlisle fly-half Mike Fearon leave the field…leaving Carlisle without a regular kicker. A reshuffle was required…Dom McGrath moved to fly-half and Nick Watts slotted in at number 9.
Half time Carlisle 5-7 Keswick
The second half started in the same vein. Carlisle pressed the home line again and again, only determined Keswick defence preventing a score. The nearest being an Adam Robertson drop goal attempt that came back off the crossbar.
Eventually, Carlisle won a penalty in front of the posts, and with no regular kicker on the pitch, Adam Robertson took responsibility…the kicking tee had gone to hospital with Mike Fearon…and Keswick felt unable to lend one to us…so Robertson promptly slotted the kick off the deck!
The game was still to close to call however, and a Keswick “try” was chalked off for a foot in touch.
In the dying minutes, Carlisle were awarded another penalty, and again Adam “Who Needs a Kicking Tee Anyway?” Robertson again obliged.
The referee blew for full time as the ball landed, and Carlisle had a deserved 11-7 victory.
