Saturday, 28th November 2009

The Crusaders Candy League fixture with Sunderland has been switched to the north east to try and ensure some rugby is played.

With the Warwick Road surfaces waterlogged there is little chance of any play at Carlisle at the weekend.  But then Sunderland have been know  to cry off a home game only hours before kick off!  So here’s hoping.

Anyone wanting to travel to this match, meet time is 10.30 am for a 10.45 am coach departure.

Weather curtails training

The recent heavy rains have meant that training at Warwick Road has been curtailed.

river petteril600 300x100 Weather curtails trainingAll the pitches and training areas are sodden, and unable to drain properly.  Our drainage outlet runs into the river Petteril, and the sluice gate is held close due to the height of the river.

Additionally, the floodlights switchgear box has been flooded and will need urgent maintenance before the lights can be used again.

Alternative arrangements
Martin Plummer, chairman of rugby, has made arrangements with Austin Friars School, for the use of their new astro turf facility.

He will be liasing with various sections of the club about the availability and appropriate arrangements.

Others less fortunate
At least we have been relatively lucky this time around  -  our friends at Keswick have had a repeat of the 2005 disaster.  Sadly though, and as much as we would like to offer them the use of our playing facilities, that is simply not possible at the moment.

We wish them well in their recovery efforts.

Keep up to date with latest weather developments and with BBC Cumbria

Old Crocs match to be replayed

Following an enquiry by the RFU North Competitions Committee the result of the match between Old Crossleyans and Carlisle at Halifax on Saturday, 14th November has been ordered to be re played.

They have directed that the game will take place on the first available Saturday (excluding the festive season period) and that is SATURDAY, 6TH FEBRUARY 2009 at 2.15 pm.

Fly half Glen Weightman ready for a kick!

Following receipt of information received from both sides, plus the match cards, and having spoken to the referee, Colin Tovey, the organising committee have reviewed the result in conjunction with the knowledge that the game finished with uncontested scrums.

Under RFU rule 7.3.1. (ii) the committee have ruled that the game was effectively abandoned at the time of switching it to uncontested scrums, which the referee confirmed.

Another trip to Halifax then, unless Carlisle decide to appeal the decision of the committee, something that would seem unlikely at this stage, as it gives us a chance to redeem ourselves!

Alnwick Colts 33, Carlisle Colts 7

Saturday 30 October 2009
Alnwick Colts 33, Carlisle Colts 7

This was to be Carlisle’s third visit to the North East, which is already proving to be a difficult hunting ground for the team during this early part of the season. Unfortunately for the Colts, today was not to be theirs as they came up against a powerful well-drilled Alnwick fifteen. Certainly the first twenty minutes saw Alnwick dominate the game which was reflected in the score, Carlisle play was being broken down with little territorial gain during this period: four minutes into the game and Alnwick were set to put the first points on the board, and though it looked like Carlisle had survived this with the ball dropping short of the posts an untypical defensive error let Alnwick regain the ball and cross the line, it was not long after when Alnwick ran in a second converted try, again from a Carlisle error.

Following this period Carlisle did start to put some play together, and spent much of the remainder of the first half applying some pressure and testing the Alnwick defence, against the run of play Alnwick put another score on the board making it 19 – 0. Carlisle did reply quickly with an impressive piece of play from the centre of the park. A number 8 pick up was well supported by the scrum half and the inside centre Matthew Minnett who this time broke the Alnwick tackles a pass to Carl Robertson who used good strength to cross the line. At this point the last thing Carlisle needed was the half-time whistle. A little more time with the momentum may have seen another Carlisle score?

The start of the second half Alnwick came out well and another try was scored; if it had not slipped from Carlisle hands it was starting too, another five minutes and the final score was on the board following a defensive error on the blind side. Carlisle did have a good deal of the ball but could not cross the line as the remainder of the match was played out. It is difficult to say where Carlisle went wrong, both the scrum and the line out were working well, open play at times was naïve both in support and defence and Alnwick took full advantage of this deserving the win; there were other factors that had a negative effect on the game for both teams but all in all the final result was a fair reflection of the match played.

Many thanks to the Alnwick team and staff for their hospitality and comments after the game, the Colt’s play again next week at home against Morpeth, Saturday 7th November.

Hannah Jackson

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death this morning, Saturday, 21st November, of Hannah Jackson.

Rest in peace

Rest in peace

Dear wife of Geoff and mum of Colin.  Geoff and Colin are well known throughout the club and the wider rugby community.

Hannah has battled bravely for a long time to defeat the cancer to which she succumbed and we all admire the courage she displayed in her fight.

Not one for making a fuss, she was determined that Geoff and Colin should continue with their rugby involvement, and until very recently they have both done that.

Hannah was a lovely lady, one who gave her wholehearted support to Geoff and Colin with their interest in rugby.

Our thoughts are very much with Geoff and Colin and their wider family at this sad time, and although grateful for the concern that people express, I know they would appreciate a little time for quiet reflection in the early days of their grief.

Hannah’s funeral will take place at Carlisle Crematorium on Thursday, 26th November at 10.20 am.

Full details will be found in the News & Star from Monday, 23rd November.
