Carlisle’s Colts were coming into today’s game with a series of convincing wins, and even though they would have players out of position, confidence must have still been high travelling across the A69 North Shields bound . . . well maybe Percy Park would have something to say in the matter.
Carlisle were put under pressure from the outset by a strong Percy Park side who soon found themselves breaking the Carlisle defence and scoring a try, the conversion followed and Carlisle were trailing 7 v 0. The game was to continue in the same vein for much of the first half with Carlisle struggling at the scrum and the lineout, Park’s forwards were dominating, their backs disciplined and Carlisle were hanging on by the skin of their teeth.
However, the first half closed with Carlisle making some changes to the team shape and slowly getting into the match, perhaps they were finally off the coach? Unfortunately, this did not prevent Percy Park scoring a try on half time taking the tally to 12 v 0.
The second half should have went Carlisle’s way, but Percy Park and Carlisle errors kept the scoreline static; it was not going to be Carlisle’s day, indeed the final play was to be a well struck penalty putting a further three points on the board – 15 v 0 to Percy Park. So what went wrong for the Colts today? Firstly, Percy Park played well, keeping their discipline, Carlisle did get into the game but could not get into a scoring position and it just was not going to be their day.
It just remains to say thank you to all the staff at Percy Park who made us welcome in the clubhouse after the game.
