Carlisle Cougars finished the season top of Championship North 2, having been beaten only once this season, conceding only 53 points and scoring over 300.
The Carlisle Women’s rugby team have spent the last 2 seasons rebuilding their squad, and having recruited a mixture of new comers to the game as well as some more experienced players the team have now found themselves exceeding even their own expectations. Now having won the league they need to start looking ahead to the challenges life in Championship North 1 may bring.
In a season dogged by fixture postponements due to bad weather it has been hard to maintain focus, but with the help of coach Jonny Taylor the women have kept the momentum from the early season and finished at least 5 points clear at the top.
Cougars Captain Lucy Meadley said ‘this has been a really good season for the Cougars, every one who has been involved this season has given 100%, and without the effort from the whole squad this victory would not have been possible. The players have worked hard to come to training, and to be professional on match days. We have also worked hard to fundraise, and have benefitted from the continued support of our main sponsor Fred Story. Without Fred and the others that have supported us we would not have been able to travel across the North of England to play rugby. We are planning to celebrate the league victory now, and then if the squad decide we should take promotion we will need to start to work hard to recruit, fundraise and train for next season’.
The Cougars now look forward to some summer sevens rugby, as well as a tour to the capital to watch the Women’s World Cup which takes place in London in August. The Cougars are always looking to increase their numbers, and there are opportunities for players of all abilities, from those who have never picked up a rugby ball, are new to sport altogether or those who have many years under their belts.
