CARLISLE SHOWN THEIR HEEL’S BY SANDAL
Carlisle were on the back foot before they got to Wakefield for this important clash. An overnight sickness bout that gripped the club, meant several players were unable to travel and with the second team cancelled due to the bug, some of those that were available were pressed into service!
Although the match was lost, it was not as one sided as perhaps the score line suggests, but Sandal were good value for their win, and it was not hard to see why they sit in a promotion slot.
Carlisle found themselves seven points down within 30 seconds. But, despite this early set back, Carlisle were unbowed and clawed themselves into the game when, ten minutes later, centre Chris Harris finished off a fine move by touching down between the posts. Glen Weightman converted.
It was a game of open rugby played at speed, with the main difference between the two teams, being the more positive and direct handling by the home team.
Within two minutes of the visitor’s equalizing, Sandal took the lead again with a converted try. Almost from the restart, Carlisle were upfield again with full back Lewis Boyd the provider for Harris to claim his second try of the game.
Sandal added two more tries, both unconverted and then on thirty seven minutes, Weightman added a penalty. The Wakefield outfit added and other seven points a couple of minutes before the interval, but Jack Oddie found a way through the defence to add five points for Carlisle just on the forty minute mark.
With a half time score of 31 pts to 22 pts, Carlisle were still in the game and there was hope that they would continue to press after the break. In the event though, they conceded four tries (one converted) and despite several brave attempts, they couldn’t find a route through the home defence.
