Carlisle RFC Crusaders (2nd XV) will be changing leagues for the 2010 / 2011 season. Having been in the “Candy” League for several years, the decision was made to apply to join the Miller Homes League that is north west based.
Whilst the Candy League has served a purpose, players are looking for more competitive rugby, something that was missing from what was largely a merit table, with no prospect of promotion or relegation.
The application to join the Miller Homes League has been approved and the Crusaders will now join, being placed in Division 1. Our joining coincides with the renaming of the organisation, now to be known as the University of Salford North West Leagues. The league had 24 new applications for membership, of which 23 were accepted.
Promotion and relegation are a feature of the set up and it is hoped that it will be much more competitive than the Candy League. The leagues are tightly controlled and failure to fulfill fixtures brings with it severe penalties. It is essential to play all matches, even if fifteen players are not available.
League regulations etc. can be found on the University of Salford (North West Leagues) website.
Whilst we know the teams in our league, fixtures are still awaited. What is certain though, is that regular rugby is almost guaranteed, and it will ensure there will always be rugby at Warwick Road every Saturday – the Miller Homes strive to ensure that when the senior XV are at home, the 2nd XV are away and vice versa.
Better rugby for aspiring 1st XV contenders – best of luck chaps.
