On Sunday 3rd October, Carlisle Cobras welcomed Sunderland RFC to Warwick Road on another wet and dismal day for their first ever encounter.
For the forth time this season El Capitan, Tom Fuller lost the toss but in a change to the previous three games they were asked to kick off proceedings, thus avoiding starting the game with the customary knock on.
The Cobras started strongly with forwards and backs combining for Brendan Ferguson to score the opening try which was unconverted, again the Cobras forwards released the backs down the Sunderland wing with George Patterson scoring in the corner. Sunderland now decided that it was now time to compete with the Cobras and for the next ten minutes both side pushed from 22 to 22, with most moves ending in handling errors due to strong aggressive defence and the poor weather conditions.
Again George Patterson was released down the right wing, being bundled into touch only yards short of
the try line. From the resulting lineout Callum Sandwith stole the Sunderland throw and burst through to score. Cobras now produce five minutes of extreme dominance which resulted in a second try for Sandwith and a first for Lewis Fuller the latter being converted by Jason Israel.
The Cobras kicked off the second 20 mins period with Tom Coulthard cutting through the Sunderland defence on one of his side stepping runs coupled with a tidy chip resulted in the first try of the second period though he was later to suffer the ridicule of his team mates after dropping the ball with the try line at his mercy, Brett Connon converted. Again some slick handling by the forwards created an opening for hard running prop David Brown to cross for a try again Connon converted.
Sunderland kicked deep into the Cobras half, the Cobras tried to hit back with a quickly taken lineout but excellent work by one of the Sunderland forwards, intercepted the throw and crossed for there only try of the game, Will Nichol ended another line braking move from the Cobras backs, and again Connon converted.
The third and final 20 minute period started again with Guy Wilkinson out pacing the defence to score under the posts, Israel converted. Once again slick handling by the backs released another speedster Lewis Read to cross for another try, with the Valiant Sunderland team tiring the Cobras crossed for a further two try’s from Wilkinson and Coulthard. With the final score being 70 – 7 this one sided score does not do justice to the endeavour and commitment that the visiting team displayed through out the sixty minutes of play.
