Carlisle under 14s hosted Morpeth, a team who did the double over them last year.

Right from the start Carlisle showed they were keen to play rugby and scored in the first few minutes when Elliott Baines combined with Ben McKean who showed good pace and strength to score in the corner.

George Sims and Elliott Baines both added further tries with James Spencer slotting home two conversions before Morpeth broke free and scored just before half time to leave the score at 19 – 7. The second half started with a good push and a further try from Morpeth to close the gap.

Christian White scored his first try of the season after some wonderful pressure and good running from Carlisle. Morpeth then took up camp in Carlisle’s 22. Valiant defending saw the visitors held out for many minutes before the gap was finally found. This seemed to inspire Morpeth as they came back rapidly with a second coverted try in as many minutes to suddenly take the lead 28 – 24.

With minutes to go and a fair bit of tension both on and off the field, James Spencer picked up the ball from 20 metres out and with a lovely dummy slipped round the defence to save the day and leave the final score 29 – 28 in Carlisle’s favour. Probably one of the closest games that this team has played.

Result:            29 v 28
Half time score:        19 v 7
