Readers will probably be more than a little surprised at the decision of utility back Ben Blain, to retire from playing at such a young age.

Ben Blain.

Ben. who is currently going through the process of joining the RAF with ambitions to be a pilot, and we all wish him well in his endeavours.

A great club man  –  general committee, youth coach. volunteer co-ordinator  – are just some of his interests at Carlisle RFC and he is fully committed to all those aspects of our game, but he has decided that the time is right to concentrate on refereeing.  He has had leanings to taking up the whistle for a while now, and almost surrendered playing during the last close season.

Having had charge of a county youth match v Cheshire at Sedbergh School recently, he feels that refereeing is where his heart really is.  We will feel his loss as a player keenly, but we have to respect his choice and wish him well in his chosen path.

Many rugby folk across the county have remarked about his refereeing ability, and that includes players – quite a rare accolade in this day and age.

He moves over to refereeing with the good wishes of all at Carlisle RFC  –  the only pity is that he will not have charge of any of our games!

We know he will be as fearless and fair with the whistle as he was as a player and he has all the attributes necessary to make a success of it.
