The Cougars number 10, Lisa Ritchie, becomes Carlisle’s first women’s rugby union player to gain an international cap.

Lisa was called up to the Scotland squad after open trials and series of regional games over the autumn. She travelled to Spain on 2nd January with Scotland and gained her first cap after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

An international cap for Lisa

Lisa said “Travelling to Spain was a great experience, I have been working hard with a new training regime to improve my speed, power and core strength, and I am pleased that the selectors are giving me the opportunity to show what I can do, playing for Scotland is an honour”.

Lisa, now 22 started playing rugby at Carlisle when she was 17. She is now one of the Cougar’s most dedicated players and has made the number 10 position her own over the last three seasons. She earned the honour of the Cougars coaches player of the 2009/10 season.

Lisa also represented the North East of England, who won the regional competition last season, but this season has progressed through the selection process for Scotland. Lisa’s call up comes just prior to the women’s 6 nations tournament and at the start of the four year cycle towards the next women’s rugby world cup.

Carlisle Cougars are starting a new year recruitment campaign to encourage new players to get involved in the sport starting Wednesday 26th January. Anyone wishing to try the sport should call Lucy on 07912110785 or email
