Cougars captain Meadley, scored two tries for the North of England.

Three Cougars, Captain/loose head prop Lucy Meadley, Vice Captain/scrum half Philippa Bell and winger Julie Hope all made the starting line up for Sundays game v The Midlands.

An injury in the backs led to wing Julie Hope being promoted from the bench to start her first representative match. With an experienced Midlands team boasting many premiership players, they took to the field as favourites against the Northern side.

It was the North who started strongly, with just three forwards phases creating space for outside centre Ruth Laybourne to score the first try for the North, this was converted by Rachel Thomas. Unfortunately this was to be the only score of the half for the Northern team and it was to be the Midlands who  went into the break on top scoring 2 unconverted tries.

The second half played out like the first with the North having most of the ball making hard yards in the forwards but unable to convert possession into points. Winning scrums against the head they put pressure onto the home team, this led to a penalty 10m out which was driven over by Cougars prop Lucy Meadley to score the first of her two tries of the afternoon. The 2nd came when a gap appeared at the edge of a ruck out wide, and Meadley again drove over the line.

With the North now 19-10 up nerves started to settle but unfortunatly a silly mistake led to a penalty for the Midlands who took advantage with a quick tap penalty taking the score to 19-15. It was another lapse in defence and simple missed tackles which led to the final score of the game from the Midlands, giving them the narrowest of victories at 20-19.

It was a great learning experience for the three Carlisle players who will bring back valued experience to the Carlisle team for their next home game on 27th February when Ruth Laybourne will line up against them for Leo’s ladies from Leeds. Kick off 2.15pm.
