The new season got underway Carlisle U14’s with a trip to Morpeth last Sunday.  In an entertaining encounter the home side won 26 – 12.

The first 20 minutes saw both sides evenly matched, both of them sharing each other’s territory.  Morpeth had the ball carried over the line after 10 mins but excellent defence ensured the ball was not grounded but retrieved and kicked to safety.  The strong Morpeth pack had the measure of the Carlisle forwards for most of the game, but good handling saw the ball moved out to the wings and a strong run by winger Charlie Pearson was only halted by a superb defensive tackle from the home side.

Finally Carlisle’s determination paid off when Fly half Struan Kyle laid the ball off to second row Harry Powell, who drove through to put Carlisle in the lead.  Kyle converted.

7 – 0 to the visitors.

Within 4 minutes of Carlisle’s try, Morpeth ran one in below the posts, which was easily converted and another 2 tries came soon after, one from a driving mawl and the other when Carlisle lost a line out on their 25 and got pushed back when when they failed to kick to safety.  Both these tries were converted.

21 – 7 to the home side

Another try from Morpeth came soon after due to sloppy Carlisle defence, but this time the kick was missed.

Despite a determined run down the right from no.8 Will Robson, lack of support at the rucks showed that Carlisle’s fitness (or lack of it) was taking it’s toll and the Morpeth forwards kept winning at the ruck and scrum.

In the last few minutes of the game, scrum half James Telford picked up from the ruck, saw a gap and ran 10 metres to score Carlisle’s second up against the right corner flag.  The windy conditions made the kick difficult, which went wide of the posts.

26 – 12 the final score.  A good first game game of the season showing a lot of promise, but we will need to work on the fitness!
