Carlisle U14’s hosted Penrith on Sunday 25th September for their second match of the season and in a close game won 19 – 14.
Within a few minutes, the visitors very strong forwards showed they meant business and with some strong running from the kick off saw them open up a sleepy Carlisle defence to score between the posts. This was duly converted.
0 – 7 to the visitors.
Both teams worked hard and more determined driving by the Penrith forwards tested the Carlisle defence on several occasions as the home side were forced up and behind their own try line on occasions.
Penrith seemed to have the power in the scrums, but Carlisle finally broke their duck with a strong run from second Row Harry Powell after a pass from the ruck, up the left to score a try. The conversion was missed.

Persistent driving from the visitor’s pack saw them carry over from a maul after 15mins, which they converted. At this point the Carlisle backs dug deep with fine defensive tackling and open play from the rucks and scrums saw them peg the Penrith team back in their own half for the rest of the first half.
Several attempts to run the ball out wide just failed to give the home side another try, until just before half time flanker Guy Graham was passed the ball from the breakdown on the 5 yard line, he drove and then released to fly half Struan Kyle who sprinted though to score Carlisle’s second, which he then went on the convert

The second half was a tight affair and mid way through the second half good hands from the Carlisle backs released hard charging winger Charlie Pearson, to break free down the right to score his first try of the season. Kyle converted.
Both sides had further opportunities to score but at the final whistle the home side hung on to win 19 – 14.
