Carlisle U14’s travelled to Kirkby Lonsdale on Sunday 9th October and in wet weather had to settle for a draw, 5 – 5.
This was a close encounter with nothing between the two sides. In the slippery conditions neither side took advantage and the first half ended without score. The large Kirkby Lonsdale pack did not offer any penetration past the Carlisle backs, who put up a solid defence with several brave tackles.
The second half saw much of the same, with plenty of recycling at the breakdown, but neither side managing to string an effective move together that threatened the other. By the middle of the second half Carlisle had the home side pinned down in their 22 and eventually a solid drive by the Carlisle pack saw Prop Max Graham carry over for the first try of the game.
In the windy conditions the conversion went to the left of the posts.
For the remaining 15 minutes, more solid tackles from the backs, particularly Scott Watson and Jack Flemming, along with determined driving from flanker Guy Graham suggested Carlisle had the game in the bag. However, deep into injury time the home side’s full back managed to break free with speed down the right wing to level the score at 5 points each. The conversion was missed.
A difficult game in poor conditions, but plenty of positive aspects for Carlisle to take away and work on.
