Carlisle under 15s took a depleted side to Vale of Lune on Sunday 20th November where they met very strong opposition.
Right from the start the Vale forwards set out their stall and within two minutes they had cleared a ruck and sent their centre in for the first try of the game.
Carlisle were pretty shell shocked as two more tries quickly followed but dug in and began to increase their resistance. In the middle of the park the huge size advantage of the Vale forwards maintained the attack and by half time Carlisle were staring down a 31 point deficit with several players clearly bruised and battered.
In the second half the Vale pack continued the onslaught, aided by the loss of Ben Johnson to injury, and touched down three more tries.
Carlisle finally worked out how to keep the ball away from the home pack and played some lovely rugby pushing wide for George Sims, who had a superb match all round, to cross the line.
James Spencer slotted a tricky kick and the nil pride was saved. Vale came back strongly and Carlisle’s Jonny Atkinson left the game after making a crunching tackle to stop a strong move.
Despite one or two forays, including a cruel bounce which cost James Spencer a certain try after a brave charge down five metres out, the game continued to it’s conclusion with Vale coming out 67 – 7 winners.
A bad day at the office for the under 15s but credit to them – they kept trying and never let their heads go down. Roll on next weekend!
