Carlisle Under 14’s travelled north to the Borders last Saturday to play a friendly at Gala and despite having a few players missing, put in a very strong performance, but went down to a 34 to 21 points defeat. This was only Carlisle’s second game this year, since their last competitive outing in mid December.
The match was a tight fought affair from the start, with some particularly strong running from the Carlisle forwards, who managed to drive posession into the home side’s territory for the most of the game.
Despite this a few handling errors saw the home side’s fly half punish the visitors twice within the first 15 mins with break away tries, neither got converted. Carlisle continued to peg back the home side and responded by winning the scrum from Gala’s put in, which resulted in prop Max Graham driving through the home side’s defensive line to score for Carlisle, which Stuan Kyle duly converted.
10 – 7
Carlisle scored again through centre Josh Heap, in typical style by out stepping the home defence. Kyle once again converted.
10 – 14
Just before the break Gala’s persistence and some wayward tackling from Carlisle failed to stop them running in under the posts. The try was converted.
17 – 14 at half time
In the second half both teams scored converted tries early on, with Carlisle’s coming again from Heap, to make it 24 – 21 and the final phase of the game was very even between the sides. But some hesitant defence from the visitors failed to prevent two late tries from Gala, which sealed their victory 34 – 21
An excellent game between two very good teams more evenly matched than the final score suggests. It gave Carlisle’s players the run out they needed and was a very competant performance from the whole squad.
