Carlisle Under 14’s travelled away on Sunday 19th February, for their long awaited County Cup tie with Kirkby Lonsdale. In an entertaining game they won 19 – 0.
In the first half, Carlisle kept Kirkby pegged back in their own half for most of the time through good handling and driving forward from the breakdowns. Solid passing from Carlisle saw the ball travelling out through the backs from one side of the pitch to the other, but they could not manage to break through a strong Kirkby defence. A big push just before half time came close, but still the home side’s defence stood strong. 0 – 0 at the break.
The second half was different and straight from the Kirkby kick off, prop Harry Powell caught & powered down the right wing only to be stopped from a solid Kirkby tackle. From the breakdown Carlisle moved the ball fast to the hands of flanker Guy Graham, who drove for the line, to the side of the posts, to score Carlisle’s first try. Fly half Struan Kyle duly converted.
Carlisle continued to pile on the pressure and the whole team applied themsleves with excellent handling and effective tackling. After 14 mins centre Will Robson carried over for the visitors’ second try, which again was converted by Kyle.
Carlisle’s third try came from more sustained pressure in the home side’s 22 and resulted in second row Robbie James driving hard to roll over and score. It was not converted, but it did not matter. With 10 minutes to go Carlisle continued to apply the pressure.
Great result for Carlisle with a truly gutsy performance from the whole team. They are now looking forward to playing Penrith in the next round.
