Carlisle under 15’s put in a splendid performance against Egremont in Sunday’s County Cup Semi-Final to secure a place against Penrith in this years final.

Wet and heavy conditions meant a hard game was always on the cards and the opening forays were pretty even as both teams tested each others tackling and running skills looking for an early advantage.

The first breakthrough came as Carlisle created an overlap which gave Elliott Baines sufficient space to step round two tacklers and score in the corner after 8 minutes.

This seemed to give the home team added impetus and three minutes later Yousef Sahib added a further try by capitalising on some good work in the centre of the park.

Egremont came back from this score with determination and quickly gained a penalty advantage, further added to by Angus Fulton collecting a yellow card for going of his feet at the ruck.

Despite the extra man advantage, the Carlisle line held the play in their own 22 for virtually the whole of the 10 minute shortage with some excellent defending that prevented points being scored.

Once restored to full strength, Carlisle pushed back at the visitors and Sam Windess scored a wonderful solo effort chasing down a Baines chip over the defence to end the first half 15-0.

The second half quickly continued in Carlisle’s favour as Windess and Baines grabbed their second tries of the day however a swift response from Egremont saw them put points on the board 6 minutes into the half.

Carlisle responded by taking the play back to the visitors end and Phil Potts was desperately unlucky not to score a try from his own fly kick as he was tackled off the ball which resulted in a yellow card for the Egremont defender.

The resulting penalty saw the ball shipped the width of the 5 metre line for Yousef Sahib to grab his second try. Egremont kept going to the end, looking for the loose ball and picking up two well worked tries from determined attacking but Ben Johnson made sure of a home victory when he popped up on the wing to take the pass and dive into the corner sealing the victory at 37-17.
